Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce | acoustic
An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play “Time In A Bottle” by Jim Croce from his 1972 album, “You Don't Mess Around With Jim.”
I've had a ton of requests for Jim Croce songs over the years so I decided to do "Time In A Bottle". It was released over a year and a half after the release of the album and two months after Jim Croce's tragic death. It went on to became his biggest song. Although I've listened to this song hundreds of times, I'd never played it until I learned it for this tutorial. The first thing you realize when you sit down to learn it is just how well written and well played the guitar parts are. Much of that was due to Maury Muehleisen. He was Jim Croce's musical partner. He was a classically trained guitarist who was the musical mastermind behind much of Jim Croce's music. This song has a definite classical nature, no doubt that came from Maury Muehleisen influence. Even without any melody, the guitar duet sounds beautiful on it's own. Sadly Maury Muehleisen was killed in the same plane crash that claimed Jim Croce's life. I found this fantastic article about the recording of this tune as well as some history on Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen. It's really interesting stuff. In part one of the lesson I go over Jim Croce's part, and in part two Maury Muehleisen's part. It's a fairly complex piece, but with a bit of practice it may not be as tough as you might think. I really enjoyed working on this one. It's a beautiful song. It's always nice learning such well constructed guitar parts. I hope you get something out of the videos. Cheers Andy |
