An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play "The WInd" by Cat Stevens from his 1971 album "Teaser and the Firecat."

I've always loved this song but somehow it slipped through the cracks for me until someone requested it recently. It's such a sweet little song with some really beautiful guitar playing.

Cat's part is much more complex than it might seem. The finger picking in the verses might take a bit to get down cleanly and the off the wall timing in the choruses will take a bit of getting used to as well. I go over these parts in detail and give you some hints on how to figure out the chorus timing.

There's a lick in the 2nd chorus that nobody seems to get right. I call it the magical lick, and once you get it you'll see what I mean. It's a beautiful little bit and adds so much to the song.

I also covered Alun Davies part. It adds a lot to the song as well. When I was recording my demo, it sounded sort of OK, but it wasn't until I added Alun's part that it really came alive and started to have that magical feel to it. He plays it in G shapes with the capo on the 7th fret. I go over his part in detail as well.

I tried recording my demo to a click but it was too stiff, so I recorded it while I monitored the original track which definitely speeds up and slows down in different areas. You might notice this when you listen to my demo especially since there's no vocal to distract the ears.

I really enjoyed learning this one. I've never played it before so even though it's been around since 1971, it was new to me! I hope that you get something from my lesson.

Cheers
Andy
