Separate Ways by Journey | solo
An electric guitar lesson on how to play the guitar solo to “Separate Ways" by Journey, from their 1983 album Frontiers. Played by the great Neil Schon.
I’ve always really liked this solo! The melodic part at the beginning is just so soulful and emotive, but it’s that KILLER speed lick at the end that always gets me! It’s a really tough lick and there’s really no way of doing it without some insanely fast alternate picking. I’m pretty sure this video will help you to at least understand what’s going on with that lick, and if you put in the time you’ll be able to play it too! Like most fast licks it’s really just a series of patterns that you need to recognize. Neil Schon makes it look easy, but believe me, it isn’t! Anyone who’s played this song in a band will know what I’m talking about. I had a ton of fun making the demo as this has always been a favorite solo of mine. Neil Schon is an amazing guitarist! Like most of my favorite guitar players he has a really strong melodic sense, but also has the chops to pull of those blazing pentatonic runs that he like to play. I hope you find the lesson useful and I hope you have fun playing this great song. Cheers Andy |
