Say Goodbye by Fleetwood Mac | acoustic "live version"
An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play "Say Goodbye" by Fleetwood Mac from their 2003 album, "Say You Will."
This lesson is based on the 2005 live performance that you can see here. I really like this version. Lindsey Buckingham is an exceptional talent. I have no idea how he is able to play such demanding guitar parts and sing at the same time! The album version of this tune is a lot different than the live version. The most obvious difference is that it's played at around 90bpm which is insanely fast. There is no doubt in my mind that it was recorded slower and then sped up. LB does this with another tune of his (maybe more) called "Time Precious Time" from his 2008 album Gift of Screws. It really makes the guitar sound incredible! Anyways, this one is in open F#7 tuning. In later versions he goes down another half step to F7. He also plays it at around 78-80bpm and newer version as slow as 74bpm. I recorded my demo at 78 as that's about as fast as I go!
It's in 6/8 and is based around a thumb pattern that stays consistent through out the tune. It's a very tough song to play and will take even experienced finger pickers a while to get down. It'll be a lot easier if you have bigger hands as that will allow you to use those thumb over chords in the chorus. I'll show you how I played it with bar chords as well. I had a really good time working on this one. It was a real challenge for me. I've been working on it for about three weeks and I still don't have it down as good as I would like. I hope you enjoy the videos and that they help you to play this very beautiful song. Cheers Andy |
