Personal Jesus Johnny Cash version | acoustic
An acoustic/electric guitar lesson on how to play “Personal Jesus” the Johnny Cash version from the album “American IV: The Man Comes Around” released in 2002.
It was the last album he released before his death in 2003. I'd never heard this song until I was watching the 2025 Superbowl game. It was the soundtrack to one of the commercials. I immediatley recognized Johnny Cash's singing and I thought it was a really cool song. Matched with the images in the video, it stood out to me. The song was written by Martin Gore from the English band Depeche Mode and was released in 1989 on their album Violator. Most covers aren't as good as the original, but this one is an exception. Produced by Rick Rubin, with John Fruciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing guitar, it has a super cool vibe which I think surpasses the Depeche Mode version. It's based around a very bluesy, hypnotic riff on an E chord. The acoustic guitar part is very nuanced and like a lot of guitar playing, it's not too difficult to learn the notes, but getting the feel and the vibe is what takes time. I go over the acoustic part in detail in the lesson, as well as the electric slide part that helps to give it that bluesy feel. I hope that you get something from my lesson and that it helps you to learn this great song. Cheers Andy |
