Night Ride Home by Joni Mitchell | electric
An electric guitar lesson on how to play "Night Ride Home" by Joni Mitchell from her 1991 album of the same name. This was her fourteenth album.
This is such a beautiful song both musically and lyrically and although Joni can sometimes be a bit dark, this song is pure positivity. It's in another open tuning, this time it's open Cadd9. CGDEGC or as Joni likes to put it C77235. Check out my "Amelia" tutorial on how she writes down her tunings. Just strumming the open chord is almost good enough for me! It sounds so amazing. As I was working through this one I realized that if you pick the strings as 5th fret harmonics except string one, do that as a 12th fret harmonic, in this order 4-3-1-6-5, it's a very recognizable theme. If you listen closely to the ending of my demo, which I extended a bit, I actually threw that in there! Like a lot of her work, the basic chords are not hard to play, but she is very nuanced in how she plays the notes inside of those chords. I'll go over all of that in the lesson. Like my lesson on "Amelia" you can play this as simple or as complex as you want or are able, but no matter how you go about it, it's always going to sound great with the beautiful open tuned chords. I'll also show you how I played the melody. It's super simple, and uses lots of chord tones and arpeggios and to me is excellent melodic writing. I always find it more expressive to play melodies on one string as much as I can, so that's what I did for this one. I've always found this song to be very uplifting and magical. I hope that you enjoy my video and that it helps you to play this beautiful song. Cheers Andy |
