Hearts by Marty Balin | electric
An electric guitar lesson on how to play "Hearts" by Marty Balin from his 1981 solo debut album entitled Balin.
I heard the sad news a few days ago that Marty Balin had passed away. He was a co-founder of the Jefferson Airplane. They were renamed Jefferson Starship in 1974 and pretty well faded out until their resurgence in the eighties as Starship. Although I'm not a huge follower of Marty Balin, when I heard the news I kept thinking about this tune. I've always thought this was a really great record, very well written and produced. I assumed that Marty Balin wrote it but it was actually written by Jesse Barish who also wrote "Count On Me" and "Atlanta Lady". Here's a very cool video of him playing it on guitar. He plays it in F# minor (MB's version is in C minor) and uses a lot more "jazz" chords than on the record. He actually has a really great voice too! On the original recording there's a lot of electric piano. I faked those parts on guitar for my demo. The actual guitar part has some really interesting chords including that cool diminished chord in the verse and the arpeggios in the chorus are the hook of the song for me. I hope you get something the videos and enjoy playing this great eighties tune. Cheers Andy |
