Can We Still Be Friends by Todd Rundgren | rhythm
An electric guitar lesson on how to play "Can We Still Be Friends" by Todd Rundgren from his 1978 album Hermit of Mink Hollow.
Todd Rundgren is one of my favorite artists of all time. The word genius tends to be a bit over used these days, but not in Todd's case. He's just one of those guys whose talent is off the charts. He engineered, produced and played all the instruments on this album as he did on most of Something, Anything and others. He's also a KILLER guitar player. Check out his solo on "The Death Of Rock'n'Roll" from the 1975 album Initiation, it's awesome! But in the end, for me it's his songwriting that is just so masterful. One of the greatest ever IMHO! Can We Still Be Friends is a beautiful song, lyrically and musically. Of course on the record it's all keys so I did my best to fake it on guitar. The chord voicings I'm using will allow you to easily play the melody at the same time so it's a nice one to play solo, or to sing over. As I was recording my demo of this tune, I originally just wanted to do the rhythm stuff, but for me one of the highlights has always been the background vocals, so I tried to cop them on guitar. To make a long story short I got a bit carried away and wound up adding a LOT of lead guitar tracks! I had a really great time working on this song so I hope you're able to get something from my videos. Cheers Andy |
